You can trace Hoskings farming in Cornwall back to the late eighteenth century, but we’ve been where we are now, on the Fal estuary, since 1883. The fifth generation of our family to work on the farm have now joined us too.

A life before tractors, transport and all of today’s technology wasn’t easy – but some things in farming are constants which have nothing to do with progress. For all this time, whatever we’ve been doing here we’ve done with care and love for everything we’ve grown, reared and cultivated, always making sure we do nothing in our farming present to harm our farming future.

Our family’s been farming just under two and a half thousand acres of beautiful and fertile Cornish countryside for over 130 years.

Here on the Fal estuary we grow over 400 varieties of daffodil, including many that are new, unique and rare. Our expertise in Cornish cut flowers, professional grade vegetable plants and bulbs - as well as our more than 50 years’ experience - means we also export worldwide and sell direct to gardeners, wholesalers, councils and gardening clubs.

This is one of the world’s best places to grow daffodils and narcissi. It’s a thrill and a privilege to farm here; we also grow cereals (which cover 2,000 acres), raise lamb (just over 600 breeding ewes), supply 80% of the vegetable seedlings Cornish and South West farmers need and, in August, September and October, sell our bulbs online, wholesale and from the shop on the farm.

What we do...

Here on the farm we keep 600 breeding ewes. Our flock lamb indoors during the months of February and March, before being turned out onto pasture along side the River Fal for the rest of the year. We are part of the Innovis ram breeding scheme, working alongside Red Tractor. Our flock is now heading away from Dorsets and mainly onto Aberfield/Aberfield SR, which is providing great results.

We also cultivate 2000 acres of combinable crops. We grow a variety of crops starting from Oil Seed Rape, Beans, Wheat, Oats and Barley, including Maris Otter Barley for our local brewery - St Austell Ales. We run a wide range of modern equipment and aim to be as efficient as possible.

We raise 140 million vegetable plants annually. We provide vegetable plants across Cornwall and the South West- stretching as far as Bristol. Jeremy Hosking (fourth generation Hosking to farm here at Fentongollan) put up his first green house in 1990 and started his seedling operation in 1991. Thirty years on and twenty poly-tunnels later... Fentongollan are now supplying millions of vegetable plugs per day to local and national growers.

Last but not least, we grow 200 acres of daffodils (approximately 400 different varieties). We supply the cut flowers and bulbs market, available to the public and trade. Jim Hosking, 3rd generation Hosking to farm Fentongollan Farm, started doing flowers by post in the early1970s. Sending daffodils off to his friends and family, which was hugely popular. His son James Hosking (fourth generation farmer here), expanded the flowers by post business into bulbs by post in the early 1980s, giving customers an option to order flowers during the winter months and bulbs during the summer months. Our Cornish daffodils are sold across the country and we now send as far as the United States. We are proud to say our flowers and bulbs by post market is still hugely popular today, amongst members of the public, gardeners, garden centres, charities and wholesale customers (across the UK and world wide).
